Actions follow thought, and counter productive thoughts will always send you in the opposite direction of your goal. – Valerie Burton

Have you ever talked yourself out of doing something you were initially passionate about?

I know I have.

Our thoughts can sometimes be the biggest deterrence in achieving our goals.

The pessimist inside you has feelings of self-doubt. The self-talk begins. The thoughts of not being good enough, unworthiness or our inability to deliver has a way of showing up just as we’re thinking about achieving a specific goal. We sometimes get caught up in comparing ourselves to other women (or men) who have accomplished what we envision for ourselves and get discouraged because we can’t possible “measure up” to that other person or our credentials in no way compare to hers (his).

These thought can potentially consume you until you’ve talked yourself out of doing the very thing that made you light up with excitement before.

Our thoughts have the power of persuasion. And just like any other “super power” can be used for both good and evil.

We must adopt the optimistic thinking style. External circumstances can be changed and framing it differently can be the difference between failure and success. Valerie Burton said it best: “failing this time doesn’t mean failing next time.” If your credentials were holding you back from getting that promotion you envisioned, don’t loose sight of your goal and don’t take it personal. Understand what’s required to take you to where you want to be and make it happen! Volunteer, pursue a professional education course, FILL IN THE GAP.

You have been empowered with the information to succeed the next time around. Don’t forget that.

No matter who we are or what we’ve accomplished, we all have a little pessimist girl (boy) inside us ready to knock down our goals and lead us to failure. Our control lies in how much power we give that bad talking little girl and our willingness to shut out all the noise and keep moving in the direction of success.
