What story have you allowed yourself to believe when it comes to your career?
I haven’t been able to advance because I wasn’t able to get that degree.
My boss hates me, that’s why I was passed up for the promotion.
I’d rather be working somewhere else right now, but I’m too afraid of change and I’d rather play it safe and settle for what I have.
Each of these stories may or may not be true to you, however they shouldn’t define you.
I have allowed myself to believe, on one too many occasions, my own (and some of societies) stories about how my career path should look. There were moments when I felt I lacked experience in an area and missed out on an opportunities because of this. However I know today that those varied experiences and career background were preparing me for my greater purpose.
Everyday, we make thousands of choice in our life. Choices that guide how we feel about ourselves and how we think society will judge us for them.
These stories talk of our successes and failures. However ultimately, if you don’t like the direction your career is headed, you have the choice to rewrite your script.
What is stopping you from finding the career you want?
You’re limiting beliefs are not the result of your boss, your credentials or your fears. They have manifested in your thoughts because you have allowed these things to guide the story of your life.
We all have had moments that have tested our strength, courage and resilience.
But it is how we choose to keep going in these moments that truly shows our growth and potential.
Replace those disempowering career thoughts with ones that will allow you to see the opportunity in your current choices.
Instead of focusing on the excuses you’ve allowed yourself to believe about your career, focus on the actionable things you can do today that will put you one step closer to your future career goals.
